The Government of Chhattisgarh, on July 07, 2026, issued directions under Section 5 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, prohibiting the fresh plantation of Conocarpus species.
The following has been stated:-
•The Chhattisgarh Government has prohibited the fresh plantation of Conocarpus species across the State under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
•The decision is based on the Central Empowered Committee's 2025 report, which identified Conocarpus as an invasive species posing risks to biodiversity, groundwater, ecosystems, and public health.
•The report also recommended restricting the species' promotion and sale and gradually replacing existing plantations with suitable native species.
•The directions have been issued with immediate effect under Section 5 of the Act, read with Rule 4(5) of the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986.
